Winthrop is the remnant of a lunar impact crater that has been flooded by lava from the Oceanus Procellarum. The formation spans an official diameter of 17.25 kilometers.

It was named after American astronomer John Winthrop. It is recorded in the IAU Gazetteer under quadrangle LAC-75.
