Virtanen is a lunar impact crater that lies within the Freundlich-Sharonov Basin. The formation spans an official diameter of 39.65 kilometers.

It is located to the northeast of the larger crater Sharonov, and to the east of Anderson. It is recorded in the IAU Gazetteer under quadrangle LAC-68.
