Geological Chronicle
Positioned in the southwestern part of the Moon due north of the walled plain Schickard, Vieta spans 87.16 kilometers in diameter. The smaller crater Fourier lies about half a crater diameter to the southeast, while Cavendish is situated to the north-northeast.
Impact erosion has degraded the outer rim, where small craters interrupt the northeast, south, and north-northwestern sections. The inner walls remain irregular, displaying incised bases in several locations around the perimeter.
The crater floor is nearly level, though uneven ground persists in the south and adjacent to a distinctive feature: a chain of small craters that traverses the northern half of the interior along an east-northeast alignment.
