Geological Chronicle
Positioned on the far side of the Moon south-southwest of Paschen and east-southeast of Lodygin, Sternfeld spans 109.8 kilometers in diameter across quadrangle LAC-106.
The crater is heavily eroded from subsequent impacts, leaving an irregular and poorly defined outer rim. The satellite crater Lodygin F intrudes slightly into the northwestern outer rim, while smaller impacts mark the northern rim and interior floor, including a small crater in the southern floor.
In 1991, the International Astronomical Union adopted the name Sternfeld in honor of Soviet space scientist Ari Abramovich Sternfeld.
