Geological Chronicle

Positioned in the southern latitudes of the Moon's far side, Minkowski is an impact crater measuring 107.51 kilometers in diameter. The crater lies approximately one diameter north-northeast of Lemaître, a formation of similar dimension. It is flanked to the northwest by the flooded crater Baldet and to the southeast by Fizeau.

The outer rim of Minkowski is heavily eroded, reduced to an irregular circular ridge crossed by numerous craters, including two prominent pairs along the eastern edge. Its relatively level floor contains a dark patch in the northeast quadrant characteristic of a lava-flooded surface, a small bowl-shaped crater at the midpoint, and the feature Minkowski S along the southwestern edge.

The crater commemorates German mathematician Hermann Minkowski and American astronomer Rudolph Leo Bernhard Minkowski.
