Located on the lunar far side northeast of the large walled plain Korolev, Kibal'chich spans 91.67 kilometers in diameter. The crater is attached directly to the southeastern outer rim of Tsander, a shared boundary that produced a straightened rim along its northwestern side.
Formed during the Nectarian period, the crater retains a well-defined edge despite slight erosion. Terrace-like shelves line the inner walls, and the interior floor is relatively level with a small central ridge and the remains of a small crater rim in the southeast quadrant.
Prior to formal naming, the feature was identified as Crater 238. The International Astronomical Union approved the name Kibal'chich in 1970, honoring Russian rocketry scientist Nikolaj Ivanovich Kibal'chich.
