Geological Chronicle
Karpinskiy is an impact crater spanning 91.4 kilometers in diameter across the northern far side of the Moon. Located at coordinates 72.6094° N and 166.8014° E, the crater is concentric with a larger and older formation along its southern rim. This combined rim gives Karpinskiy a wider interior wall along its south face. Just to the north, the double-crater formation of Milankovic and Ricco lies across the northern part of the larger crater containing Karpinskiy.
The inner wall of Karpinskiy is terraced along its northern half, whereas the southern half is wide and irregular, lacking a well-defined terrace system and marked by a small crater along its slope. The interior floor is flatter in the north and rougher near the midpoint. A rille system marks the northern floor, dominated by an arc-shaped rille that nearly parallels the inner wall before joining the rim of a small, bowl-shaped crater in the northeast.
To the southeast of Karpinskiy lies the smaller crater Schjellerup. The crater, sometimes spelled "Karpinsky", is named after Russian geologist Alexander Karpinsky (1846–1936).
