Geological Chronicle

Gaston is a small impact crater in the western expanse of Mare Imbrium on the lunar near side. The formation has an observed diameter of 2.02 kilometers and cuts to a depth of 0.36 kilometers into the underlying volcanic basalt plain.

The crater forms an irregular depression directly north of crater Boris, positioned along the edge of the sinuous rille designated Rupes Boris. The larger crater Delisle lies to the east and southwest across the mare surface.

Originally noted on sheet 39B2/S2 of the NASA Lunar Topophotomap chart series, the designation was adopted by the IAU in 1976 and formally confirmed in 1979, honoring the French masculine personal name.
