Geological Chronicle

Gärtner is a lava-flooded remnant of a crater in the Moon’s northeast, along the northern edge of Mare Frigoris. Its southern half is completely missing, leaving a semicircular basin at the mare’s edge. Democritus lies to the north. The name honors Christian Gärtner, a German mineralogist and geologist (c. 1750–1813).

The surviving rim is heavily worn and eroded, with notches and indentations formed by past impacts. A few low rises mark the northern half of the floor.

Rima Gärtner runs from the crater’s midpoint toward the northeast rim for about 30 km. The bowl-shaped craterlet Gärtner D lies near the midpoint between the two ends of the crater rim.
