Geological Chronicle
Located on Mare Insularum near the central region of the Moon, Gambart spans 24.68 kilometers in diameter to the south-southeast of Copernicus. In the past, lava flooded the crater floor, leaving a relatively flat surface surrounded by a smooth but somewhat polygon-shaped outer rim.
To the southwest of Gambart lies an area of hilly terrain deposited from ejecta during the Mare Imbrium impact, known as the Fra Mauro Formation. Northeast of Gambart sits the smaller Gambart C crater, with a lunar dome—a type of shield volcano—situated roughly between them.
